The lawyer didn’t say another word.
He simply placed the worn hospital bag into my hands and walked away.
For several minutes, I just stood there in the empty hallway, staring at the faded fabric Gloria had refused to let anyone touch for years.
My heart pounded.
What could possibly be inside that was so important?
That night, I took the bag home.
It smelled faintly of lavender, just like the blanket Gloria always kept folded beside her bed.
I hesitated before opening it.
On top was a sealed envelope with my name written in elegant handwriting.
“To my husband…”
The words alone brought tears to my eyes.
I slowly unfolded the letter.
“If you’re reading this, it means I’m gone. First, thank you. Not because you married me… but because you gave me something I thought I would never have again—someone who truly cared whether I woke up each morning.”

I wiped away a tear and kept reading.
“Everyone believes this bag contains something valuable. They are wrong. The real treasure isn’t money… it’s the truth.”
Beneath the letter was a small brass key.
There was also an old photograph of Gloria standing beside a little white cottage near a lake.
On the back she had written only one sentence:
“Everything begins here.”
The next morning I drove to the address written on another piece of paper.
The cottage had been abandoned for decades.
The windows were covered in dust.
The garden was overgrown.
I almost turned back.
Then I noticed the brass key fit the front door perfectly.
Inside, time seemed frozen.
Furniture stood exactly where it had been left.
A record player sat on a table.
Family photographs covered the walls.
But one photograph made my blood run cold.
It wasn’t Gloria.
It was me.
Or at least… someone who looked exactly like me.
The man in the picture was wearing an army uniform.
He had my eyes.
My smile.
Even the same small scar above his eyebrow.
On the back of the photograph were five words that left me speechless.
“My son… if only I’d found you.”
My hands started shaking.
Had Gloria mistaken me for someone else?
Or was there something she had never told me?
Suddenly I heard footsteps behind me.
An elderly neighbor had been watching from across the road.
“You finally came,” she whispered.
“I’ve been waiting for the man Gloria chose.”
I stared at her in confusion.
She looked at the photograph and sighed.
“She spent forty years searching for the child she was forced to give away after birth. She never stopped believing he was alive.”
She paused before adding the words that changed everything.
“When she met you in the hospital… she didn’t just see a kind stranger.”
“She believed she had finally found her son.”
My heart stopped.
Was it only the wish of a lonely woman…
Or had Gloria uncovered a family secret that had remained buried for more than forty years?
The answer was hidden in one final envelope sealed beneath the floorboards of the old cottage… and what it revealed would change my life forever.
